…or how to position my organization on Facebook?

You finally have a website worth its salt. Your site was created by a professional web agency and looks quite good. Now that the tool is created, you can finally use it to expand your audience and make what you offer known to the vast crowd of the web. The door is wide open and… Facebook is the key.

With more than 3 billion active users per month, Facebook has become THE reference in terms of general public social networks.

The first thing you need to do is create your organization or business on Facebook. And there you have two choices: either you create a page or you create a group! Both have pros and cons and the decision really depends on your goals.

Difference between a Facebook Page and a Facebook Group

Facebook Group

Setup Created by an official representative of a company, organization, celebrity or group. Can be created on any topic, by anyone. Restricted access for members.
Visibility & Accessibility Also visible outside of Facebook. Indexed by search engines. Ability to filter audience by country and age. Ability to make a group private, make it visible only to group members and prevent indexing by search engines.
Public Completely open to any visitor (with the possibility of filtering by country and/or age) who clicks on the “Like” or “Follow” button. The page can be suggested to friends by every visitor. Better control over the audience. A group can be: Public, public content; Private, requires admin permission, members-only content; Hidden, invitation-only, invisible to non-members, members-only content.
Publications & notifications An admin can post under the Page profile (instead of their personal profile, which gives them “legitimacy”). Additionally, these posts are visible on the Page wall AND in the followers’ news feed if they choose. Members and administrators post under their personal profile. These posts are visible on the group wall and on the members’ wall if they choose.
Direct messages It is not possible to contact all subscribers at once except by posting on the page wall. It is possible to contact them individually via Messenger. Events You can create an event from your page. Ability to create an event from your group.

Facebook Page or Group: in summary

Facebook Page

A Facebook Page is primarily designed for businesses, public figures, organizations, or brands to interact with a wide audience.

It serves as a public profile visible to everyone, including users who are not on Facebook. Pages are used to post updates, promote products or services, and run ads.

They allow for fine-grained role control, allowing admins to assign different levels of access to team members for content management and marketing.

Pages also provide valuable insights into audience behavior and post performance, making them ideal for marketing and outreach purposes. They can be indexed by search engines and are accessible to anyone on the platform.

Facebook Group

In contrast, a Facebook Group is meant to build a community around a common interest or topic.

Groups are more private than Pages and allow for discussions, resource sharing, and more personalized interactions between members.

While Pages are visible to everyone, Groups are more focused on community engagement and have more flexible privacy settings, allowing admins to control who can join and view content.

Groups are typically not used for promotional purposes, but to foster interaction between members, with group information available to track engagement and growth within the community.
